The key to encouraging children and the teenagers to be active and engage in sports is to make physical activity fun. So, starting from this very idea, we are now introducing an innovative new class format that enables teens to exercise effectively, and never get bored. Here’s what you need to know about GRIDZ, and why your child should try it too.

As we all know, the benefits of being physically active from a young age are incredibly varied covering anything from developing motor skills and strong muscles and bones – to enhancing concentration and cognitive function and, on a psychological level, improving performance and self-confidence. And there is no shortage of options your child can explore – depending on their natural inclinations – each with their unique set of positive effects on their development.

Football, for instance, improves stamina, speed and strength, as well as eye-to-hand coordination, but it is also great as a social activity, teaching teamwork. Ballet highly improves coordination, posture and flexibility, but also encourages discipline and mental strength through memory training and repetitive dance movement. While swimming supports cardiovascular health and improves endurance, but also aids brain development and is a great way to relieve stress.

Having said that, it can sometimes be difficult to find the right sport for your child – as so much depends on their own experience and on how naturally they pick up the skills required to perform it well. It can also be challenging to adapt the chosen activity as children become teenagers, and their preferences change. In this context, providing them with an exercise option that’s more flexible and very accessible can help keep them active for longer. That’s where GRIDZ comes in.

What is GRIDZ?

Bringing HIIT exercises together in a circuit format adapted for young members aged 12-17, GRIDZ offers a full body workout - with a fun twist. Following a warm-up, participants move through 16 stations across 4 zones, each time switching to new exercises. Accompanied by energising music, each exercise is approximately 35 seconds long (followed by 10-second rest), either requiring bodyweight or special equipment such as Blaze Pods and HECOsticks.

What makes it a great training option?

1.       Great cardio training

At this specific age, it is important that you engage in a full mix of activities - in order to ensure a complete, healthy physical development. Which is why this HIIT circuit class is a combination of bodyweight, light resistance and agility exercises, helping gain better strength, balance and coordination.

2.       Making training fun

The dynamic nature of the workout, as well as the fact that the trainers propose new combinations of exercises on a regular basis – mean that the class is a new challenge every time. The music background makes the experience even more engaging.

3.       Opportunity to socialise

While each exercise needs to be done independently, our teen members can feel more motivated to participate in this class, as they can work out alongside their friends; they can also meet and make new friends as part of the challenges.

4.       Perfect complement to other activities

GRIDZ training can be carried out as a stand-alone workout solution. But it can also help develop skills that are specific to certain sports that your child may already practice or may be inspired to start practicing - such as tennis or football.

5.       Accessible to all

The GRIDZ class is not a progressive programme, which means that regardless of an individual’s current fitness level, they can start the course any time.

How does GRIDZ compare to other Aspria Academy courses?

Non-competitive training

Because participants train individually within their own grid, i.e. doing separate exercises, they can work out at their own pace, without the fear of peer pressure.

Versatility

Depending on the season, the classes can take place just as easily indoors or outdoors. And the range of innovative equipment can be used in different ways to create new challenges. We will also provide “a new circuit every half year, as well as new music to make the class less repetitive”, says Alexandra Hermann, Academy Manager at Aspria Hamburg.

Family fun

In the future, parents may also be able to participate in the exercises, making it possible for families to enjoy this class together. “Everyone still trains individually but parents and their children can follow the same activity circuit”, Alexandra explains - given that the exercises can vary in intensity and be just as challenging for adults as they are for teenagers.

The new course will be available in our clubs starting in September. If you think your children will love the exciting and fast-paced training GRIDZ provides, simply have a look at the current timetable and register via our member-exclusive myAspria app.
